Learn how to prepare a professional curtain wall shop drawing booklet step-by-step. This Part 2 helps you to choose the glass combination.
In the part 1, we learned how to choose the suitable profiles such as mullion & transom. So, after choosing the mullion & Transom profiles, we need the glass analysis.
However, you can check out the part 1 in our articles.
Glass Layer Calculation for Curtain Wall
General Info
In this stage, we will choose the glass as a major part of curtain wall facade. Therefore, it should be precisely chosen to transfer all loads to the profiles and work together with alumium part.
We can use the different software such as SAP2000, SJ Mepla to find out the required thickness of layers according to the panel dimensions.
Although, all softwares gives you the good result, but we prefer to use the CAD-Plan softwares since it designed exactly for the facade industry.
In addition, the analysis helps you to check different factor like de-formed shape, surface distribution loads and etc to choose the more suitable thickness and combination.

Factors to Control
As a facade designer, We have to check the many items to make sure that the chosen glass is strong enough against the loads such as wind, material self loads. So , you need to control different factors such as:
- Maximum Dimension of panel.
- The outer/Inner layer thickness.
- The spacer thickness.
- Glass type like: tempered, laminated or LowE according to project requirements.
Points to check
To choose the correct combination and thickness, you should consider the important items such as:
- Critical panel due to the size and possition.
- Transferring the glass loads to the lower level by the transom profile.
We will check how to start the shop drawing after choosing the alumium and glass system in the next step. Stay with and follow us for the next parts to prepare a perfect curtain wall shop drawing.
